Distribution pattern
With patchy distribution, covering entirely the higher parts of most mountains and partly the lower ones (Strandzha, the Eastern Rhodopes, the Eastern Stara Planina, Sredna Gora, the Western Frontier Mountains). With dispersed isolated sites in the lower mountains (Sredna Gora, the Eastern Rhodopes, etc.), but also in the Thracian Plain, the northern part of the Iskar Gorge, etc.

Habitats
Breeds along clean, cold fast-flowing rivers and larger streams in their mountainous and fore-mountainous parts, as well as around lakes at high altitudes. Breeds near rivers and large streams within mountain towns, villages and industrial zones, including below bridges, barrages, buildings and other constructions.
