Distribution pattern
Patchy in all high mountains – Western and Central Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin, part of the Western Rhodopes, Vitosha, Osogovska and Malashevska Mountains and Belasitsa. Single breeding sites or such in neighbouring squares also occur in the northern part of the Iskar Gorge, along the Struma Valley, in Slavyanka, Sredna Gora, near Sliven, etc. A natural contact zone of hybridization with Alectoris chukar exists along the line Asenovgrad – Zlatograd

Habitats.
Breeds in heath and scrub, alpine and subalpine grasslands, sclerophyllous scrub, dry siliceous grasslands and on screes and other open stony areas.
