Population size: 600 – 900 pairs

Distribution pattern

With patchy distribution, concentrated in the higher parts of Rila, Pirin, Vitosha, Western and Central Stara Planina, Western Rhodopes, Osogovo Mountain and Slavyanka. At lower altitudes are found also in Ponor and Plana.

Habitats

Breeds in coniferous forests (especially Picea abies, Pinus heldreihii and P. peuce, P. sylvestris) and mixed forests. Rarely in broad-leaved deciduous forests (mainly of Fagus sylvatica).
