Distribution pattern
With patchy distribution covering more fully the highest parts of the mountains Rila, Pirin, Stara Planina and Vitosha, and more dispersed – in the Western Rhodopes, Sredna Gora, Osogovska Mountain and Belasitsa.

Habitats
Breeds only in high mountain blanket bogs, alpine and sub-alpine grasslands, sometimes mixed with Pinus mugo communities and often intersected by streams or around mountain lakes, also on stony slopes and in depressions.
