Frequently asked questions

Can I gather data for the purposes of the Atlas with a mobile application other than the SmartBirds Pro?
Yes, you may gather data with another application for the purposes of the Atlas under certain conditions. In order to make use of your data for the Atlas, the following minimum information is required:

  • Name of the species;
  • Date of observation;
  • Geographical coordinates.

It is necessary to indicate the degree of probability of nesting. However, with other applications, it is not possible to apply the methodology for the study of bird abundance, which requires the selection of test sites through an account in SmartBirds.org.

For details on the file type and how to provide it, you can contact the SmartBirds database administrator at the following email: .

Can I use the SmartBirds Pro app with an iPhone?
For now, the SmartBirds Pro mobile app is available for only OS Android 5.0 and later versions. Owners of iOS mobile devices can gather information directly through their browser. All you have to do is go to SmartBirds.org and log in to your account. Once logged in, users can gather data, even without being connected to Internet. The coordinates of the observer can be selected or indicated on a preloaded map.

However, to make full use of the system, we recommend that you use OS Android. Some users use a second device (tablet) for gathering data with SmartBirds Pro, and their phone serves as an Internet source.

Can I enter data via a desktop computer or other type of desktop?
Yes, if your data is gathered on paper or otherwise, you may fill in or edit your data on SmartBirds.org through your personal account. The data shall be used if all required entry fields are filled in – species, date, location and degree of nesting probability for nesting species.
Can I provide data for the purposes of the Atlas that is not gathered electronically and does not have geographical coordinates?
Individual observations, especially of rare species or nesting data, can be provided by indicating an approximate location or the nearest locality. For more information on how to provide such data, you can contact one of the database moderators.
Is the ownership of the data retained?
The data ownership of all data is retained and stored in the personal profile of the observer at SmartBirds.org. All data shall be used only for the purposes of the Atlas and the protection of birds under the terms of the SmartBirds database.
How is it guaranteed that the preparation of Atlas of Birds II shall not reveal habitats of endangered species that are potentially subject to encroachment?
Data on specific habitats of vulnerable species shall not be published. The SmartBirds database automatically hides observations of nearly 80 endangered species, potentially subject to encroachment. The atlas shall visualize the data in 10×10 km squares, and for the rarest species, a frequent subject of encroachment (Saker Falcon, Imperial Eagle, etc.) the data shall be presented in 50×50 km squares.
