Population size: 350 – 750 pairs

Distribution pattern

With limited patchy distribution, mainly along the Southern Black Sea coast, in the southern part of the Struma River Valley and the Varna-Beloslav Lake Complex. With dispersed breeding sites north along the valley of the Struma River, in Northeastern Bulgaria, the Thracian Plain, the Sofia Field, etc.

Habitats

Breeds mainly in bogs and marshes, in water – fringe vegetation, especially reed beds with bushes on their periphery (including around fishponds, wetlands in quarries and other standing fresh waters or around standing brackish waters). Does not avoid fens, transition mires and springs, grass communities in wetlands, including those near temporary or permanent wetlands, spills, etc. Along the Struma River breeds in bushes of Tamarix sp., Salix sp., Alnus sp., Rubus sp., etc., along the banks or on islands in the river, along canals and other running waters. As an exception – in areas overgrown with marshy vegetation in the outskirts of settlements.
