Population size: 300 000 – 600 000 pairs

Distribution pattern

With patchy and in some areas dispersed distribution. Densely covering the coniferous belt of the mountains of the Rila-Rhodope Massif and Vitosha, the high parts of Stara Planina (eastward to Kotlenska Mountain). Isolated breeding sites are found in the Eastern Rhodopes, Sredna Gora, Lozenska Mountain, and Eastern Stara Planina and even in the Thracian Plains, the Sofia Field (including in the urban part of Sofia), along the Tundzha River valley, etc.

Habitats

Breeds mainly in coniferous forests of Picea abies, Pinus peuce, P. heldreihii, P. sylvestris and P. nigra, in mixed forests and in broad – leaved deciduous forests of Fagus sylvatica. Nests also in orchards, tree and bush plantations, in particular – in artificial plantations of coniferous trees.
