Population size: 15 000 – 35 000 calling males

Distribution pattern

Widespread in the plains and semi-mountainous parts of the country close to grain crops and meadows, as well as at some more open grassy mountain areas. Absent from areas with dense forest cover in the mountains, as well as from drier areas with shrubs and sparse woody vegetation. In recent years, it has disappeared from a number of localities and its population density is declining.

Habitats

Breeds in various open habitats, avoiding only the low grass areas, areas with dense bushes and stony areas. Prefers mesophilic grasslands, crops, and other (annual) grass crops, improved grasslands (perennial grass crops) (especially alfalfa) and wastelands. Inhabits humid grassland and tall herb communities, alpine and subalpine grasslands, steppes and dry calcareous grasslands.
