Population size: 5 000 – 7 000 pairs

Distribution pattern

With patchy and dispersed distribution, covering more densely the Eastern Rhodopes, separate areas of the valleys of the rivers Struma and Mesta and the mountains around them, parts of Strandzha, Sakar, Derventa Hills and Eastern Stara Planina. Isolated nesting sites in the Thracian Plain, Rila, the Sub – Balkan valleys and the Black Sea coast to the north to some forest parts in the coastal part of Dobrudzha.

Habitats

Breeds almost exclusively in drier broad – leaved deciduous forests, mainly sprout forests of Quercus sp. Very often – without dense undergrowth.
