Distribution pattern

With patchy and dispersed distribution, concentrated mainly in the mountainous forest areas. Denser distribution in the mountains Rila, Pirin, Western Rhodopes, Sredna Gora, Vitosha, Central Stara Planina, more fragmented in Western and Eastern Stara Planina, Strandzha and Osogovo Mountains, as well as isolated breeding sites in the Eastern Rhodopes, Ludgorie, Danube Plain, etc.

Habitats

Breeds mainly in coniferous forests – Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, P. nigra, P. peuce and P. heldreihii; in broad-leaved deciduous forests, mainly of Quercus sp. and Fagus sylvatica; in mixed forests. It is also found in orchards, tree and bush plantations, and public parks and gardens (forest type parks).
