Grey Partridge
(Perdix perdix)
Category of conservation concern (IUCN, 2020) – Least Concern
Population size: 10 000 – 25 000 pairs
Distribution pattern
Widespread distribution in plains and in some higher valleys and mountain fields (depending on the availability of arable land, especially with grain crops) and less often in open higher parts of the mountains, (the Vitosha plateau). It is almost absent from the wooded or dry low mountainous areas, where it usually breeds in wide and open valleys. In some places the species is artificially resettled, there is no data on the impact of these activities on the distribution.
Comparative distribution of the species compared to the first breeding birds atlas (Iankov, 2007): Breeding locality until 2007 | Breeding locality until 2007, confirmed after 2015 – | New breeding locality after 2015. – The breeding localities after 2015 are identified on a base of raw data from smartbirds.org.
Habitats
Breeds it sites with mosaic character of the biotopes, prefers mesophilic grasslands; humid grasslands and tall herb communities; dry siliceous grasslands; steppes and dry calcareous grasslands; heath and scrub in places with moderate climate, as an exception even in alpine and subalpine grasslands. Builds its nests also in improved grasslands (perennial grass crops), crops and other (annual) grass crops, wastelands, often in larger towns, villages and industrial zones, public parks and gardens in the outskirts of settlements, as well as near orchards, tree and shrub plantations or strips of trees, shrubs and mosaics of them.
