Distribution pattern
Patchy distribution in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas with old forests – Strandzha, Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin, and the Western Rhodopes. More dispersed in the Fore Balkan, in the Osogovska Mountain, Sredna Gora, the Thracian Plain, Eastern Rhodopes, etc. As an exception – breeds also in flat forested areas and along the Danube River.

Habitats
Breeds in old broad – leaved deciduous forests, in mixed forests, and in coniferous forests with hollow trees. Less often in alluvial and riverine forests and brush, and on inland cliffs and exposed rocks (at Lomovete). Probably single pairs breed as an exception also in settlements.
