Population size: 10 000 – 18 000 pairs

Distribution pattern

With patchy distribution in all mountains up to the tree line, more densely in Rila, Pirin, Western Rhodopes, Stara Planina, Sredna Gora, Vitosha and its neighbouring mountains, in most of the Western Frontier Mountains, in the high parts of the Eastern Rhodopes and Strandzha. Dispersed in Sakar, the forested plains in Ludogorie, Dobrudzha, the Thracian Plain, etc.

Habitats

Breeds mainly in broad-leaved-deciduous forests, coniferous forests and mixed forests, favouring the edges and their sparse areas, as well as to clearings, rides, forest meadows, sometimes on the edge of the alpine and sub- alpine grasslands. Rarely breeds in forests on the outskirts of mountain towns, villages, industrial zones (Gabrovo, Smolyan, etc.).
