Population size: 20 – 60 pairs

Distribution pattern

Concentrated in the beech belt of Central Stara Planina and the neighbouring parts of Sashtinska Sredna Gora. It is also found in Western Stara Planina, in the Vrachanski Balkan and in Western Rhodopes, where unknown breeding sites probably exist.

Habitats

Breeds in centuries-old broad-leaved deciduous forests (mainly of Fagus sylvatica) or mixed forests (especially of Fagus sylvatica and Abies Alba), less often in coniferous forests in higher parts of the mountains.
