Population size: 10 000 – 20 000 pairs

Distribution pattern

With patchy and dispersed distribution, more dense in the broad – leaved tree belt (and especially in the beech woods) of Stara Planina, Sredna Gora and Strandzha, as well as in the forests in the plains in Ludogorie and Dobrudzha. More dispersed in the remaining high mountains and in the plains (Danubian Plain, Thracian Plain, etc.).

Habitats

Breeds exclusively in broad – leaved deciduous forests, giving preference to high-stemmed beech forests of Fagus sylvatica and F. orientalis, and less frequently in old forests of Quercus sp., Fraxinus sp., etc.
